What to Look For in a Gutter Quote (Miami Homeowner's Guide)

Most homeowners get two or three quotes for new gutters and find themselves staring at numbers that don't line up. One is noticeably cheaper. Another is more detailed. Neither explains why.

The difference usually isn't the price. It's what's included.

Here's what a complete gutter quote should spell out, so you can compare fairly and avoid paying twice.

1. Gutter size

A quote should say the size, such as 5-inch, 6-inch or 7-inch. This matters more in South Florida than almost anywhere else, because our storms drop several inches of rain in an hour. A 5-inch gutter on a large or steep roof will overflow no matter how well it's installed.

Ask: what size are you quoting, and why that size for my roof?

2. Seamless or sectional

Seamless gutters are formed on site in one continuous piece for each run, so the only joints are at corners and downspouts. Sectional gutters come in short pieces joined every few feet, and every joint is a future leak.

If a quote doesn't say, ask. In our climate, the difference shows up within a couple of years.

3. Material and thickness

Most homes here get aluminum, but not all aluminum is equal. Thicker aluminum holds its shape and resists denting and pulling loose in wind. Copper costs more and lasts decades.

Ask: what material and gauge are you using?

4. How many downspouts

This is the detail cheap quotes cut most often. Downspouts carry the water down and away. Too few, and the gutter overflows in heavy rain even if the gutter itself is perfect.

A long roofline may need 4, 6 or more. A quote should list the number and, ideally, where they go.

5. Hangers and spacing

Gutters are held up by hangers. Their type and spacing determine whether your gutters survive hurricane season. Hidden hangers screwed into solid fascia, spaced properly, hold far better than spike-and-ferrule or widely spaced hangers.

Ask: what hangers do you use, and how far apart?

6. What happens to the old gutters

Removal and disposal takes time and costs money. A quote should say clearly whether it's included, so it doesn't appear later as an extra.

7. Fascia condition

On older Miami homes, the wood behind the gutters is often rotted from years of overflow. Gutters need solid wood to hold on. A contractor who never mentions fascia either hasn't looked, or plans to hang new gutters on bad wood.

Ask: did you check the fascia, and what did you find?

8. Warranty

There are two kinds, and you want both spelled out:

  • Material warranty, from the manufacturer

  • Workmanship warranty, from the installer

A verbal "don't worry, we stand behind it" isn't a warranty.

9. License and insurance

In Miami-Dade and Broward, your contractor should be licensed and insured. If someone gets hurt on your property, or the work fails, that's what protects you.

Ask for the license number, and look it up. Any legitimate contractor will hand it over without hesitation.

10. Color and finish

Gutters are visible from the street for the next 20 years. A quote should name the color. If you want a custom color to match your trim, that's usually worth asking about up front.

Red flags worth walking away from

  • A price quoted over the phone without seeing your roof. Roofline length, height and roof type all change the job. A phone number is a guess.

  • A large deposit demanded up front.

  • No written quote, just a number on a business card.

  • Pressure to sign today, or a discount that "expires tonight."

  • No license number, or reluctance to give one.

  • A price far below everyone else. Something is missing from it, and you'll usually find out what during the next storm.

The questions to ask every contractor

Copy these to your phone and ask all of them:

  1. What gutter size and material are you quoting?

  2. Seamless or sectional?

  3. How many downspouts, and where?

  4. What hangers, and what spacing?

  5. Is removal of the old gutters included?

  6. What's the condition of my fascia?

  7. What warranty do I get, in writing?

  8. What's your license number?

A contractor who answers all eight clearly is one you can trust with the job.
